An International Referral Source for Spinal Deformity Surgery

Dr. Lowenstein specializes in exceedingly complex cases of adult and pediatric spinal deformity, welcoming not only local but out-of-state and international patients. When other scoliosis surgeons need a consult, Dr. Lowenstein is the expert that they call.

In his 15-year career, Dr. Lowenstein has treated the full spectrum of spinal deformities. His areas of expertise include the following:

  • Scoliosis Revision Surgery: A world-class scoliosis surgeon, Dr. Lowenstein uses a variety of cutting-edge techniques, such as vertebral body tethering, to reverse spinal deformity. Scoliosis, an abnormal sideways bend in the left-to-right orientation of the spine, can be congenital, neuromuscular, idiopathic, growth-related, or degenerative. Without skilled intervention, scoliosis often progresses. However, a qualified scoliosis surgeon uses a variety of innovative techniques from magnetic growing rods to spinal fusion and vertebral column resection to realign the spine.
  • Kyphosis & Lordosis Correction: Kyphosis occurs when an abnormal forward hump develops in the thoracic spine. In contrast, lordosis occurs when the inward curvature of the lower back exceeds normal limits. Both conditions result in adverse symptoms, such as evidence of visible skeletal deformities and pain. Kyphosis and lordosis correction techniques may include minimally invasive interventions such as spinal instrumentation placement, fusion, osteotomy, kyphoplasty, and artificial disc replacement.
  • Flatback Syndrome Surgery: A spine devoid of healthy spinal curvature is known as a flatback. An exceedingly rare condition, flatback syndrome requires skilled intervention from a spinal deformity surgeon who specializes in pedicle subtraction osteotomy. During this procedure, the surgeon removes a vertebral region known as the pedicle in an effort to reintroduce curvature into the spine.
  • Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS): FBSS occurs for a variety of reasons, including implant rejection, surgical error, scar tissue accumulation, and more. Dr. Lowenstein serves as a regional referral source for these highly complex procedures, often a patient’s last resort.
